While the Austin American-Statesman delivers news and information that affect its readers, Statesman Media delivers programs that positively affect the community and supports other organizations that do the same. In 2015, that local support totaled an impressive $1.2 million.
The annual Statesman giving program consists of the Statesman Season for Caring campaign, the Statesman Swim Safe for Austin Kids program, employee donations to United Way-affiliated organizations and volunteer participation in the United Way Day of Caring and support of the Cox Employee Relief Fund. The program also includes support of the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Central and South Texas and Literacy Coalition of Central Texas as well as holiday gift giving to Sanchez Elementary School
and volunteer support at the H-E-B Feast of Sharing. Finally, Statesman Media contributes by donating in-kind ad space in the Statesman to hundreds of nonprofits each year as well as providing marketing strategy advice.
Of particular note are Statesman Media’s two signature programs, Statesman Season for Caring and Statesman Swim Safe. Since 1999, Statesman readers and advertisers have donated more than $9 million in funds and in-kind goods and services to the featured families and hundreds of other families associated with the nonprofit organizations. Since 2000, Statesman Swim Safe has raised more than $350,000 and provided free swimming lessons to more than 12,000 Central Texas children.
